Laura Nyro

For anyone who reads my other blog, the fact that I've picked Laura Nyro for artist of the month should come as no surprise.

As I stated in the post previously linked, her music has been the soundtrack to my November. (Of course, I started loving her music too late in the month to make her the artist for November.) I've been fangirl gushing about her for weeks now, so I'm not even sure what to say or where to start now...

A few weeks ago, I checked out Michele Kort's biography of Laura from the library: Soul Picnic: The Music and Passion of Laura Nyro. It was excellent and I would certainly recommend it to any Laura fans, or even people who like to read well-written biographies. (I know they exist! I'm one of them! :P) I thought I'd include my goodreads "review" of it since it's not really a review and I've been in such a blue funk for the past three weeks that writing this post has been unnecessarily hard.

My review[of sorts]:

Although Laura Nyro has been on my radar for over two years, I only recently downloaded one of her albums.
That album was New York Tendaberry and, let's put it this way: if I had it on vinyl, it would never leave my turntable

My [now] 13 year old brother who hangs around me a lot, detests her; he identifies her as "the woman who wails." And, while it's a bit of an exaggeration, he's right - she's a wailer! But that's what I love about her: how she sings her heart out. I have a great admiration for singers who convey a lot of power and emotion in their singing. As someone who expresses herself through the medium of singing/songwriting, I would love and strive to have that sort of emotional strength in my voice, and even lyrics. I don't, though. Or at least, I feel like I don't. Sure, nice adjectives have been used to describe my voice, but something in me wants to have a rough, emotive voice like, say, Janis Joplin. So I'm going to take up drugs and alcohol and see where that gets me.

Anyway, I tell my entirely too-judgmental brother that Laura is an acquired taste, and I suppose she is. For a while, even I was ambivalent about whether I liked her or not. But I kept an open mind and now I'm basically in love with her. So there you go!

All this to say, this biography was mahvelous; an excellent look on Laura's life and her groundbreaking musical influences. This book has further fueled my passion for all things Laura Nyro; I am resisting the urge to go out and buy her entire discography.

My favourite photograph in the book of the lovely Laura:

[Caption: Nyro taking a dance break during New York Tendaberry recording sessions, 1969. (Photo by Stephen Paley, courtesy of Michael Ochs Archives)]

Since writing that review, I have downloaded her 1968 album, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession, and while it's fast becoming a favourite, I don't love it as wholly as New York Tendaberry.
It really is a shame that, while other artists had hits singing Laura's songs, she never had one singing one of her songs. To me, covers of her songs are unnecessary. No one sings her music the way she does; each song seems to come straight from her soul. Anyway, I shall wrap this up by saying that Laura Nyro is amazing. I've not had an emotional reaction to music like the one I've had to hers in a long time. Many don't like her because of her voice or the "unevenness" of her songs, but that's alright. I love her. The end.

Listen to 'Sweet Lovin' Baby', my favourite song from New York Tendaberry:

Ooh, look at that! This is my 100th post! Hmmm... I'm thinking about doing something a little different for my next post. So, be on the look out for that...

  1. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Laura Nyro! "Eli & the thirteenth confession" is my personal fave record by her, but "New York Tendaberry" is a really great album too, and a very worthy sequel.

Laura had a 30 year career, in which she sang many songs, always bestowing just the right emotions that would best suit them She's not just a "Wailer", she can also sing BEAUTIFULLY, check out her album "Nested", and you'll see what I mean. It's super smooth and melodic, the polar opposite of the gritty edginess of "New York Tendaberry". Your Bro might even like it!;))

Btw, I totally agree about the "Hit" covers the radio pushed, Laura's originals are VASTLY superior in every way.

  2. Thank you for your comment! I cannot tell you how pleased I was to hear from a fellow Laura Nyro fan. And such a hardcore one, at that! :)

Oh, I know she has more sides to her than just a "wailer". :) I haven't listened to Nested yet, but I really need to! I'm slowly but surely going to work my way through all of her albums. I can't get enough! :) Haha, hmmm... maybe I'll have to catch him unaware with it sometime... ;)

Glad you feel the same way about that! I listen to various covers and can only think, "Hm... it's missing one thing: LAURA."

  3. You're very welcome, Melee! I love talking with others in Laura's Tribe! Yea, I guess I am hardcore, I too can't get enough of Laura's awesome sound.

It's funny, just a few months ago, I had barely heard of her - then out of curiosity, I clicked on her original version of "Stoned Soul Picnic" over at Youtube.... My first thought upon hearing it was: Ho-ly frea-king crap, this Lady is absolutely AMAZING!!!!(I haven't bothered with the 5th Dimension version since. ;))

It's now December, and I've bought several of her albums. I still need "Season of lights", "Mother's Spiritual", "Walk the Dog and Light the light", and "Angel in the Dark" - the title track to that one was one of her last recorded songs, and I must admit it reduces me to tears every time I hear it.... :..( It's SO Beautiful, but knowing she didn't live to see it's release, just destroys me.

BTW, I've decided to buy some more CDs of the "Eli" album as an extra stocking stuffer for my friends and family members this Christmas. Amazon will love me, I'm sure, and I hope I can win Laura some new fans.

Well, gotta get to bed, I've been up way to late as it is, but thanks for the quick reply, it's always nice chatting with a fellow Laura-holic! =)

  4. Your ear must be much better than mine! I remember listening to 'Stoned Soul Picnic' a couple times over the past couple years, but it still took me forever to realize how amazing she was and how much I loved the song! :)

I just listened to 'Angels in the Dark' - ahhh! so beautiful! Why, oh why did she have to die so soon?

Ooh, great idea! I hope you do win some Laura fans! I think "Eli" is the perfect intro to her music.

    Hee - that's exactly where I headed after I replied! :)

  5. Hi again Melee!
re: "Stoned Soul Picnic". Well, it's the way she sang "Sur-ray -eee -eee, surreeeee", that really got me, and when the overdubbed harmonies kicked in, the sound of multiple Laura Nyro's all at once, just blew my mind into the stratosphere! Laura's voice is the most Beautiful sound I've ever heard, and I mean that sincerely.

Re: "Angel in the dark". I remember the night I discovered Laura's music, I spent a couple of hours on Youtube checking out various songs by her. I was so filled with joy at hearing these great tunes - but then I started to notice the "R.I.P We miss you" comments, and my heart sank....
I lost a Sister, and a Niece to cancer, and when I read how Laura and her Mom both succumbed to ovarian cancer at the same age, the irony just overwhelmed me. I sat there grief stricken, crying uncontrollably over a Woman who just a couple of hours ago, had meant next to nothing to me. I realized then, that through her music, she had really touched me on a Soul deep level, and from that moment on, I'd forever love her and be her devoted Fan.

Re: Great idea. One of my friends received his package today, but he said he was going to put it under the Tree, so I'll have to wait till Christmas to find out what he and his Wife think about the album. By the way, my christmas present to myself is the Japanese import of Laura's sixth album "Smile", which includes three bonus tracks that were not on the original release. :)

  6. Hello again Artamus! :)
I love those parts too! Listening to it now, I wonder how I was ever not utterly amazed by her talent.

I hate when that happens: the realization that the great new artist you've just found is already gone, and just when the world seemed more beautiful for a second because they lived in it.
Oh, I am very sorry to hear that. xx It really is the musicians we can connect with on a personal level that mean the most to us.

I hope they like it! And that sounds like an absolute fab Christmas present to give yourself! I hope you are having a merry season. :)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Thanks for your kind thoughts Melee.

Well, a little bit of Christmas came early for me today. I just got home, and was very happy to find Laura's "Spread your Wings and fly" live album in my mailbox.
I had ordered it the other day, and I hoped it would get here quickly, it made my day! =))))
I'm about to pop it in for a listen.

I'm having a pretty good season, just trying not to spend too much, since along with their regular presents, I'm also giving everyone Laura's "Eli"album, as well as "Fruit", the first album by the Asteroids Galaxy Tour(They are another great Music Act that I love, and want to help get the word out on!)

    Have a great evening!

  8. :)

Packages in the mail always make my day too! There is little better than that! Especially when they contain Laura Nyro, of course. =D
I "blasted" Eli and the 13th Confession today while wrapping presents. Evidently, I consider it far superior to Christmas music. ;)

That's great that you spread awareness of the artists you love! I shall have to look up Asteroids Galaxy Tour. :)

    I hope you do too!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yea, I've been getting a lot of Laura in my mail box, since September(when I first became a fan of her's), I've been ordering an album or two every week or so.

Great choice for present wrapping music, "Eli" is such a fun filled joyful album, it always puts me in a good mood. =) I blasted it in the car on the way home tonight!

Yes, you should most defiantly check out The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, they are awesome - and their new album "Out of Frequency" is coming out on January 31st - yay!
I've already per ordered it, natch...;)) I think Laura would have liked them, just like her, they have cool eclectic style, and their music really stays with you!

I'm listening to their new single "Heart attack", as I'm typing this. If you'd like, I can give you some links to their videos.

Well, bed time again, darn it ;))

    ReplyDelete
  10. It puts me in a good mood too! If I had a car, I would definitely blast it there. Also, I'm curious - what are your most favourite songs off "Eli"?

Ooh, yes - links would be great, thank you! :)

It does have a tricky way of coming around every night... ;)

  11. Re: My fave songs on "Eli".
All of them. That's one album where I never skip any songs when I listen to it, the flow of it is perfect!

    Have wonderful evening! :)

  12. I suspected you were going to say that... :) But I agree!

Wow! I really, really like their sound! It's fun, but not banally so. You have officially converted me into an Asteroids Galaxy Sound fan! I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow which means I shall be away from my computer, and I find I am feeling disaponited 'cause I want to keep listening to this group... :)

Hope you have a great weekend!

  13. Re:I suspected you were going to say that... :) But I agree!

Yea, I guess my enthusiasm for that album(and for Laura herself), is hard for me to hide! =) She displays such a vivid imagination with her songwriting, and performances here, the way I describe it is, "She paints epic movies into my head" - I LOVE it!

Re:Wow! I really, really like their sound!

I'm VERY glad to hear that!=))))

Re:It's fun, but not banally so. You have officially converted me into an Asteroids Galaxy Sound fan!

I hoped you might like them, their music is full of fun, and when you watch some of their behind the scenes videos, you can tell they are having a ball doing it!

Re: I'm leaving on a trip tomorrow which means I shall be away from my computer, and I find I am feeling disaponited 'cause I want to keep listening to this group... :)

I hope you have nice trip!
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour are well represented on Youtube, so they'll be there waiting for you when you get back, and their music is available to buy on CD, vinyl, and MP3 at Amazon, and at their official site,I just pre ordered the second album "Out of Frequency" - can't wait to crank it up - but in the meantime I'm about to pop "New York Tendaberry" in the Player!

    Have wonderful trip!

    ReplyDelete
  14. "She paints epic movies into my head" - Haha! I love that! I never would have thought to put it that way, but it's true. :)

I'm definitely planning on buying Asteroids Galaxy Tour's first album on emusic next month when my credits refresh!
When people are having a lot of fun doing things, it really shines through, doesn't it? Even if you don't realize the fact specifically, you still feel the magnetic pull.
...Aaaand I just noticed how I mispelled "disappointed". XD

I did have a wonderful trip! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas. :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Welcome back, Melee!

The "Painting movies in my head" idea came to me almost immediately, as I was listening to Laura's original version of "Stoned Soul picnic" for the first time. I really felt as tho I was actually at the picnic, and I could almost taste the red/yellow honey - I never got quite that drawn into it when I heard the 5th Dimension do it. I enjoy their versions of her songs, but they are just fun little ditties - whereas Laura builds new worlds out of sound, and she invites you to come and visit her in there!

By the way, my sister received her gift of the "Eli" album today, and she called to say she loves it! =)
I was really pleasantly surprised that she had gone on the web to find out more about Laura, as soon as she head it. Chalk up another Tribe member for Laura - woohoo!
I hope the others all feel the same way when they hear it.

You are in for a treat with the Asteroids album! I went to their site, and pre ordered their 2nd album on CD, and as a bonus, they gave me the MP3 version for free,I'll be able to download it on the release date,so I don't have to wait for the CD to ship to hear it, very nice!

I hope you have a great Christmas! I'll be with some friends and family, we're going to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie after dinner.

Have a wonderful evening, and thanks for your responses, I enjoy these fun musical conversations. :)

  16. Um, that's supposed to be "As soon as she HEARD it", not "head" it... So you aren't the only one who occasionally misspells....;))

    ReplyDelete
  17. I absolutely agree with all you said about The 5th Dimension's versions of Laura's songs vs. the originals. They're fun ditties; and while there is nothing wrong with that, in the hands of Laura, they are masterpieces.

Oh, that's really excellent! I wish my siblings were as receptive to her music. Ah, well.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! That sounds like a lovely way to spend it.

You are more than welcome - and thank you! I've really enjoyed these conversations too.

Hehe, that's reassuring to know... ;)

  18. Re:I absolutely agree with all you said about The 5th Dimension's versions of Laura's songs vs. the originals. They're fun ditties; and while there is nothing wrong with that, in the hands of Laura, they are masterpieces.

Yea, I listened to the 5th's version of "Save the Country" the other night, hadn't heard it in quite a while, and I was surprised by the lack of energy they displayed - it just dragged compared to Laura's up beat single version, which is the one they were obviously trying to copy.

Also, on "Eli's comin'", 3 Dog Night leave out the wonderful repeating coda "Eli's comin', better hide your heart Girl". Their's just stops, where Laura finishes the song out in grand style.

Don't get me wrong, I really do like the 5th Dimension, and 3 Dog Night. They are great, and I'm glad Laura got to collect huge royalties from their covers. They did lots of other great songs, that are still "Their's". But when it comes to the songs Laura wrote, let's face it, NO ONE can even begin to compete with Laura Nyro on her home turf! I just wish the radio programmers back then would have realized that indisputable fact!

Oh, that's really excellent! I wish my siblings were as receptive to her music. Ah, well.

Well, everyone has their own tastes, and sometimes there is resistance to try something unfamiliar. I recently discovered another great Female Artist who I'm very impressed with called "Ladyhawke", and I sent her first album to my Niece, I hope she likes her - I've been listening to her music almost has much as I have Laura's....Almost, but of course, Laura is still my #1 favorite by far, and always will be. :)

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! That sounds like a lovely way to spend it.

Yes, we had a fun time, the movie was really good! I hope you had a great Christmas too!

You are more than welcome - and thank you! I've really enjoyed these conversations too.

Cool,I hope I'm not over loading your blog space with all these comments. I really do love talking shop about Laura, she's become a big part of my musical enjoyment, and I'm grateful to communicate with someone who is also a big fan of hers. Even on the discussion groups dedicated to her that I go to, were a lot of hard core fans meet, I haven't had as interesting conversations as I've had here.

I hope you have a fun new years!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Oh, yes - I totally agree! I like The 5th Dimension and Three Dog Night too (Laura covers aside) and am so glad Laura could get royalties since the money enabled her to do what she wanted on her albums. *sigh* Radio programmers play what they think the people want, and let's face it - mass opinion doesn't always posses the greatest taste.

I think I've heard of Ladyhawk but I can't remember if I've ever listened to her. I hope your niece likes the album!

I did have a great Christmas, thank you! :)

Oh, no - I don't mind all these comments at all! It's invaluable to connect with likeminded people. And in response to what you said about the discussion boards - that really made me smile! I'm glad you stumbled across my blog. :)

    I hope you did too!

P.S. Bought Fruit by Asteroids Galaxy Tour last week on emusic and am enjoying it more and more on each listen. :)

  20. I was just talking with the Laura fans on the Yahoo NYRO group, and those who saw the Fifth Dimension in concert back in the day, said they would always tell the audience about her, when they did her songs - very nice of them, and it probably helped more people find out about her own albums back then.

Ladyhawke is really great, I've listened to her album almost as much as I have "Eli & the thirteenth confession", and believe me, that's a LOT!
I actually discovered her while watching an Asteroids Galaxy Tour video, they had her on the suggestions side bar, and I clicked it out of curiosity, SO glad I did! That's exactly how I found Laura too, while watching a Fifth Dimension video - I LOVE how Youtube is rescuing Music Lovers from the tyranny of the radio!!!! =))))

Here are some links to her Music, if you'd like to check her out.

"Manipulating Woman"(I think this may be my favorite so far)

Ok, one more, but really every song on the album is incredible! "Morning dreams"

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTbT42Ji3v0

Her new album comes out in March, I can't wait! :)

Hope you had fun on New Year's too!

The discussion board I frequent(the "NYRO" group on Yahoo), is getting better, I've been having some pretty good conversations with some of the members. The recent news of Laura getting inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has helped to wake them up a bit, I hope the buzz continues.

Yea, I LOVE the Asteroids! I can't wait for the new album("Out of frequency") Judging from the first two singles "Major" and "Heart attack", I think this album will be just as good as "Fruit", maybe even better - you know how it is with second albums, like "Eli"....;)) By the way, they are coming to America this month on their first headlining tour(they opened for Katy Perry, who I'm definitely NOT a fan of, last time), but alas, Atlanta is not on their list of Cities - argh! I REALLY want to see them in concert, the live videos they have on Youtube are incredible.

Well, I hope you enjoy the Ladyhawke songs, have a great evening!

  22. Artamus: Oh, that was very good of them! The 5th Dimensions gets many brownie points from me for that. :)

I am so grateful to YouTube! I've found so many great artists there... Ooh! I really like Ladyhawke too! She's slightly funky, but very pleasant to listen to. All those songs were fantastic; I think I'm going to have to buy her first album some time too! Thanks for another great recommendation!

I think you're getting to me... I'd say I love "Eli" as much as "Tendaberry" now. =D I love them for such different reasons... but now I'm not so sure I could say I liked either better, haha.
My favourite bands never seem to come to my state either. :|

  24. >Artamus: Oh, that was very good of them! The 5th Dimensions gets many brownie points from me for that. :)

Yes, it certainly was nice of them. Especially since I think they only met her once. Of all the Musicians who covered her songs, Laura was apparently pretty good friends with one Band in particular: Blood, Sweat, & Tears. They wanted her to be their Lead Singer, but it didn't happen. It would have been interesting if she had joined them, since their very next album was a huge multi-platinum hit, and Laura's music would have been heard all over the radio with her OWN voice singing it, for a change!

    >I am so grateful to YouTube! I've found so many great artists there...

    100% agree!

    >Ooh! I really like Ladyhawke too! She's slightly funky, but very pleasant to listen to. All those songs were fantastic; I think I'm going to have to buy her first album some time too! Thanks for another great recommendation!

You're very welcome, I'm glad you like her.=) A LOT of younger Female Artists have been touted as "The new Laura Nyro", and most of them are nowhere near her league - but Ladyhawke actually kinda quailfies. She has a completely different sound, and She plays Guitar, not Piano, but creatively, I think she and Laura are kindred Spirits. I think the "Ladyhawke" album is absolutely one of the most perfect Pop masterpieces since "Eli & the thirteenth confession", and I wouldn't give such high praise to just anyone - she really is outstanding in my opinion.

    >I think you're getting to me... I'd say I love "Eli" as much as "Tendaberry" now. =D

Well, I love "Tendaberry" quite a lot too. ;))

    >I love them for such different reasons... but now I'm not so sure I could say I liked either better, haha.

I tend to think of those two albums as being like rides at Disneyland. "Eli" is her "Pirates of the Caribbean" - a funfilled rollicking adventure. And "Tendaberry" is her "Haunted Mansion" - still lots of fun, but a noticeably darker ride.

    >My favourite bands never seem to come to my state either. :|

I saw a video of Ladyhawke playing Atlanta, but it was from 2009, before I knew about her - argh!

Hope you have a lovely new week. :)

    You too!

  25. That's interesting! Though the greater awareness would have been great, somehow I can't picture Laura as part of a group; probably because seemed like such a loner. Actually, that's how a record company in the 60's marketed one of her albums as well as Janis Ian's (who is another favourite). http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb274/GodSistah/l_a48eee3f41e3269c8689597b59f178f0.jpg

My flash player is not behaving right now, or else I'd definitely be listening to Ladyhawke right now [via youtube, that is]. :)

As always, your simile [about 'Eli' vs. 'Tendaberry'] is spot on and I love it! I do tend to like darker and more intimate music which is probably why 'Tendaberry' won me over first. :)

I hope your Friday is everything it should be. :)

I doubt she would have stayed with them for more than an album or two, but it certainly would have been an interesting collaboration.

Listen to "Woman's blues" on the "Eli" album - I really think that is a perfect glimpse of what she would have sounded like with B.S.&T.

"Society's Child" is one of my all time favorites, pure genius!

    >My flash player is not behaving right now, or else I'd definitely be listening to Ladyhawke right now [via youtube, that is]. :)

Sorry to hear that, I hope you can sort it out. There are live versions of some of the songs from Ladyhawke's upcoming new album on Youtube now, and they sound great, but the fidelity is a bit distorted. I can't wait to get the new CD in march. I'm glad it's only a couple of weeks till the new Asteroids album comes out, this is a good time for new Music!

    >As always, your simile [about 'Eli' vs. 'Tendaberry'] is spot on and I love it! I do tend to like darker and more intimate music which is probably why 'Tendaberry' won me over first. :)

I love all Laura's stuff! You should also check out "Nested", I've really been enjoying that one recently.

  27. Ooo, if 'Woman's Blues' is an indication than it is a shame she didn't do something with them!

'Society's Child' is, indeed, pure genius! I am awed that she wrote such an amazing song at such a young age.

It's working now. My computer is moody. *rolls eyes*

I got The First Songs last month and last week I bought a record of Christmas and the Beads of Sweat at a record shop my father and I wandered into. (We have a machine that can convert records to CD, but then again - I do adore vinyl!) But I will definitely get Nested next! Not sure how soon it will be, but it's at the top of my list. :)

Yea, I think their styles complimented each other, and it would have been interesting to hear what she would have written with them in mind. By the way, Lew Solof, the Trumpet player for BS&T, played on "Save the Country" from NYT.

    >'Society's Child' is, indeed, pure genius! I am awed that she wrote such an amazing song at such a young age.

That's a classic! I'm kinda jealous tho, that it became a huge hit, in it's original version, but Laura's "Wedding bell blues" written about the same time, had to wait for the 5th Dimension cover to go top ten.

    >It's working now. My computer is moody. *rolls eyes*

    Glad to hear it's ok.

    >I got The First Songs last month

Just FYI: "The first songs" is a 1973 Columbia re issue of her 1966 debut on Verve, "More than a new discovery", I have read that the audio mix is different than original, and some of the tracks are in a different order. I bought the Japanese import of "Discovery", which has been remastered to match the original mix, and the track order corrected. It's a great album either way, I hope you enjoy it!

    >and last week I bought a record of Christmas and the Beads of Sweat at a record shop my father and I wandered into. (We have a machine that can convert records to CD, but then again - I do adore vinyl!)

Wow, that's coincidental, the very first Laura album I bought was "CATBOS" - on vinyl! When I first discovered her, I was desperate to get her albums, but no store in my area had any, except of that one LP. I don't actually have a turntable, but I figured it's a really nice piece of Art, so I bought it. I think it's really great that the cover is actually a picture drawn by a fan, who left it at Laura's dressing room door during one of her concerts.

    >But I will definitely get Nested next! Not sure how soon it will be, but it's at the top of my list. :)

Great album, I especially like "My innocence", and "American Dreamer", I just played that CD on a long drive Friday!

    >Hope your Sunday is peaceful. :)

Well, I'm going to try to learn some Laura songs on Guitar. I recently got the "Time and Love:The Art and Soul of Laura Nyro" Music book, and I'll be studying it. I was surprised there really aren't many instrumental Guitar versions of Laura's music on Youtube. I did find a nice fingerstyle rendition of "Emmie" Here's the link, if you'd like to check it out:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG5s6jKNn-s

I'm going to try to do some videos myself, once I learn a few of her songs - I know the Piano is the instrument most associated with her, but I think she needs to be properly represented among Guitarists too! ;)

Have a Fun Day on Sunday! ;))

  29. Hey, it's me again....

I just wanted to give you an update on the differences between "The first songs", and "More than a new discovery" I just bought "First" on MP3, and the track listing is slightly different. The mix seems to have a touch more reverb to it, but otherwise it's pretty much the same. Here is a track listing for "New discovery", in case you want to rearrange the songs to hear them in their original order.

More Than a New Discovery (Original Album) running order:
    "Goodbye Joe" – 2:38
    "Billy's Blues" – 3:20
    "And When I Die" – 2:40
    "Stoney End" – 2:46
    "Lazy Susan" – 3:53
"Hands Off the Man" (Flim Flam Man) – 2:29
    "Wedding Bell Blues" – 2:44
    "Buy and Sell" – 3:38
    "He's a Runner" – 3:40
    "Blowin' Away" – 2:23
"I Never Meant to Hurt You" – 2:52
    "California Shoeshine Boys" – 2:45

  30. (Re: Society's Child) Well, don't songs with taboo subjects generally get more attention? ;)

I did know that The First Songs was a redux of More Than a New Discovery, but I didn't know about the different track listing! Thanks for the info - I think I will switch the song order around; I like that idea!

Haha, that is coincidental! It really is a lovely cover. I love that Laura chose to use a fan's drawing. :)

Ooh, I've been eyeing that. (Meaning Time and Love:The Art and Soul of Laura Nyro) There's piano sheet music in it too, right? Good on you for making sure Laura is properly presented among guitarists! Let me know if you do decide to post your covers. I liked that version of 'Emmie'. (Admittedly, that's one of my top favourites of Laura's songs.)

Oh, and guess what! I bought Ladyhawke's album off emusic! I've been more in the mood for "upbeat" music lately than my general folk choices - so I figured why not! I'm pretty sure I've had the song 'Dusk Til Dawn' in my head for the past 48 hours. (Well, that and the song 'Still Alive' from the video game Portal. But that's another story...)
Your two music recommendations have rocked my emusic purchases this month - thank you. :)

I hope your week is going well so far!

  31. >(Re: Society's Child) Well, don't songs with taboo subjects generally get more attention? ;)

Considering the times, and the lyrical content, it's pretty amazing that it got played at all. By contrast, "Wedding bell blues", is probably the most G rated mainstream pop song Laura ever wrote - although apparently she originally had a much grander Rock Opera style idea for it, but the powers that be at Verve wouldn't allow her to record it that way. I'd love to hear the original, knowing what I know about Laura, I'm sure it was Epic!

    >I did know that The First Songs was a redux of More Than a New Discovery, but I didn't know about the different track listing! Thanks for the info - I think I will switch the song order around; I like that idea!

Yea, I think the album flows much better in it's original form. I bought it, along with NYT on MP3, just so I'd have them on my computer, and the first thing I did was restore the track order.

    >Haha, that is coincidental!

I'm thinking of buying a turntable so I can play it.

    >It really is a lovely cover. I love that Laura chose to use a fan's drawing. :)

I really like that picture, because unlike most Fan Art, it's not just a copy of an existing publicity photo. The Artist looked at several pics of Laura, and came up with an original piece that captured her essence, and mood perfectly. I read that she got paid $300.00 for it, not a lot of money,(tho it's probably like getting thousands in today's dollars)but it must have been a HUGE honor for her as a Laura Fan, and that's priceless.

    >Ooh, I've been eyeing that. (Meaning Time and Love:The Art and Soul of Laura Nyro) There's piano sheet music in it too, right?

Of course! The piano is to Laura what the Guitar is to Jimi Hendrix. :)

    >Good on you for making sure Laura is properly presented among guitarists! Let me know if you do decide to post your covers.

I'm definitely going to try, but I'm sure it will take a while to get good enough to do her justice.(She's a Legendary Musical Genius, and I'm.... well...just Me! ;))

So what song should I try to learn first? I'm torn between "Farmer Joe", "When I was a freeport, and you were the main drag", and "Gibsom Street", but I'm also thinking "Crazy Love", or "Gardenia Talk" would be great, or maybe "Luckie", or "The Confession"... What do you think, I'm open to suggestions.(It's a really tough choice, because Laura has SO many great songs!)

    >I liked that version of 'Emmie'. (Admittedly, that's one of my top favourites of Laura's songs.)

That's probably her best known song to the general public, aside from the famous covers.

    >Oh, and guess what! I bought Ladyhawke's album off emusic!

You made my day with that statement! =))))

    >I've been more in the mood for "upbeat" music lately than my general folk choices - so I figured why not! I'm pretty sure I've had the song 'Dusk Til Dawn' in my head for the past 48 hours.

"Bang Bang Bang - on the wall - from dusk till dawn!" It's interesting that The Asteroids also use the phrase "Bang Bang Bang", in their current single. ;))

    >Your two music recommendations have rocked my emusic purchases this month - thank you. :)

You are most welcome, and thank you for buying their albums, they really do deserve the support! By the way, you can listen to Ladyhawke's new single "Black, White, and Blue" at her official website:

    http://www.ladyhawkemusic.com/

I like it a lot, and I'm looking forward to the new album in March.

    >I hope your week is going well so far!

Yea, it is, I just bought some vintage style bling to fix up my Guitar with, so I can be looking good when I get proficient enough to hopefully do Laura proud on Youtube. ;))

    Have fun!

  32. I would love to hear a realized version of Laura's original vision for 'Wedding Bell Blues', as well!

You should definitely buy a turntable! As much as I appreciate how convenient mp3s and CDs are, vinyl possesses a romance that those two things fail to have.

You've probably already chosen a song to do, but I would vote for 'When I Was a Freeport..." since I've been listening to Christmas and the Beads of Sweat lately. Don't worry too much about Laura's legacy - just put your heart into it and I know she'd be proud. :)

Really? I didn't know 'Emmie' was so well known! On second thought, maybe I did... Now I'm not even sure, haha. Anyway, it is a wonderful song. :)

In my head it makes sense Ladyhawke and Asteroids Galaxy Tour would use the same phrase, as I shall forever associate those two artists together in my mind, since I heard about them from the same person. :)
I am happy to do so, as I'm all for supporting artists! People who illegally download everything drive me insane.
I am listening to Ladyhawke's new single at the moment and am really liking it!

Haha, groovy! I hope that's going well. :)

  33. >I would love to hear a realized version of Laura's original vision for 'Wedding Bell Blues', as well!

Laura probably would have too! She did not see eye eye with the Verve suits on a lot of things, and apparently, the making of the "Discovery" album was not a high point for her(even tho it really did turn out great.) I read an interview where she said she considered "Eli" to be her REAL fist album.

    >You should definitely buy a turntable!

Well, I probably should, because now I'm the proud owner of TWO Laura LPs. A good friend of mine was at a place where they sell vinyl, and she found a good condition copy of "Eli", and picked it up for me. I was hoping the scent of Laura's perfume on the lyrics sheet would still be there, but it's hard to tell, my nose isn't very sensitive.

So, can you recommend a decent reasonably affordable turntable?

    >You've probably already chosen a song to do, but I would vote for 'When I Was a Freeport..." since I've been listening to Christmas and the Beads of Sweat lately.

    Ok, "Freeport" it is!

Don't worry too much about Laura's legacy - just put your heart into it and I know she'd be proud. :)

I am not worthy, but I will try my best.

Really? I didn't know 'Emmie' was so well known! On second thought, maybe I did... Now I'm not even sure, haha. Anyway, it is a wonderful song. :)

Well, of the ones that haven't had "Hit" covers done of them, it's pretty popular.

In my head it makes sense Ladyhawke and Asteroids Galaxy Tour would use the same phrase, as I shall forever associate those two artists together in my mind, since I heard about them from the same person. :)

Well, glad I could introduce you to some fun new music. :)

    >I am happy to do so, as I'm all for supporting artists! People who illegally download everything drive me insane.

I tend to go above and beyond the call of duty for Artists I really like, and think are deserving - in Laura's case, I'll usually buy her Cds, plus the MP3 album, then more CDs or MP3s as gifts. I'm meeting My Friend I mentioned above for Dinner and a Movie tonight(Beauty and the Beast in 3D), and I'll be giving her the Asteroids new album on CD.

I am listening to Ladyhawke's new single at the moment and am really liking it!

Yea, I love it! I'll be pre ordering the new album asap, I tried to do it from her site, but I guess because it's from New Zealand, the shipping charges are insane - it should be available from Amazon soon tho.

    >Haha, groovy! I hope that's going well. :)

I just got the email from Amazon, they shipped my new pickups, so I should be able to put it all together next week.

  34. I cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to have next to no creative control. No wonder she considered "Eli" to be her first.

I actually am not very knowledgeable about turntables. Though they probably cost more, I love having a turntable that can convert records and tapes to CD. I'm not sure who made ours, but I can ask my dad if you'd like to at least have the maker for a starting point.

I'm glad you could introduce me to fun new music too, hehe. :)

Wow! You really do go above and beyond the call of duty! That's excellent, though. I hope you enjoyed the dinner and movie. (How could you go wrong with Beauty and the Beast, though?)

Sorry it took me so long to respond! I've been really distracted lately. -_- Did your pickups come?

  35. >I cannot imagine how frustrating it would be to have next to no creative control. No wonder she considered "Eli" to be her first.

I think she warmed up to the album once it was re released by Columbia("The first songs")In her concerts, she actually performed songs from it more often than the ones from "Eli". In fact, I have never heard her do a live version of "Eli's comin'", tho I read that she performed it, and "Stoned Soul picnic" at the Monterey Pop Festival - but they are not on the album or Blu-ray. I hope they eventually get released, I'd love to hear those versions!

Speaking of Laura in concert - I just received "Season of Lights" in the mail, and I'll be cranking it all day tomorrow! =))))

    >I actually am not very knowledgeable about turntables.

No prob, I think I've found the perfect one, the audio technica at-lp60. It gets rave reviews, and it's only about $75.00. I will be getting it soon, but there are a few other things I need to buy first.

    >I'm glad you could introduce me to fun new music too, hehe. :)

I've been really enjoying The Asteroid's "Out of Frequency", and I'm stoked for Ladyhawkes new album too. Have you seen Ladyhawke's new video yet?

    >Wow! You really do go above and beyond the call of duty! That's excellent, though.

Spreading joy among my Friends is a great pleasure for me. :)

    >I hope you enjoyed the dinner and movie. (How could you go wrong with Beauty and the Beast, though?)

We quite enjoyed it, the 3D was very well done, I hope they do ALADDIN next! We also went to see "The Woman in Black", and it was excellent.

    >Sorry it took me so long to respond! I've been really distracted lately.

Trust me, I KNOW the feeling! ;))

    > -_- Did your pickups come?

Yes, haven't had a chance to install them yet tho... I did buy a Zoom H1 stereo recorder, so as soon as I get the gear together, I'll try to learn "Feeport", and if I can perform it decently, I'll post it somewhere so you can hear it.

Have a nice what's left of the weekend!

  36. What's your favourite of Laura's concert albums?

Ooh, that sounds nice! My record collection is small, but when I'm on my own I think a turntable will be a must.

I haven't seen Ladyhawke's new video yet, but I will certainly go watch it!

Aladdin would be cool in 3D!

I hope you have fun learning it! Though, I say that more in hope than expectation. Learning new songs can be a drag. But so worth it in the end! (Hehe, if only I took that thought to heart more often; I'd have finished this Chopin piece by now, for one. Grr.)

I hope you are having a delightful week!

    >What's your favourite of Laura's concert albums?

Well, I now have "Spread your wings and fly" from '71, and "Season of lights" from '78, and they are both really great. If I had to choose just one, it would be "S.Y.W.&F", by a hair, mainly because it's just Laura and her Piano, and it was pretty early in her career, when Live recordings of her were much more rare. "Season" is excellent, but she's playing with a full Jazz Band, and she definitely lets them go wild, lots of instrumental solos, and lengthy interludes. I kinda prefer the more intimate "All Laura, all the time" feeling of "S.Y.W.&F."

    >Ooh, that sounds nice! My record collection is small, but when I'm on my own I think a turntable will be a must.

Well, that one seems like the perfect choice for both of us. There are demos all over Youtube, if you search for it there.

    >I haven't seen Ladyhawke's new video yet, but I will certainly go watch it!

I hope you enjoy it. I just got an Email from her site, that says the new album is being delayed until May in the UK, I hope it still comes out on time here in the US.
I think it's a dumb idea to get People exited about an album, then change the release date at the last minute - I guarantee by the time it's officially released, the entire thing will be available on Youtube, and various torrent sites. That's exactly what happened with "Out of Frequency" by the Asteroids, I had to resist the urge to listen to the whole thing before I got it. They are really just promoting Piracy by doing that. I guess record label suits are just as clueless now, as they were in Laura's time, maybe even more so!

    >Aladdin would be cool in 3D!

Yea, I hope they do it. I just got the Blu-Ray of "Puss and Boots", and I bought the 3D version by mistake, fortunately, it also comes with the regular disc as well. Right now, a 3d TV/Blu-Ray player rig is not on my budgetary agenda, but if they come down to a decent price, I may get one some day, and at least I'll already have a movie to watch on it. ;))

    >I hope you have fun learning it! Though, I say that more in hope than expectation. Learning new songs can be a drag. But so worth it in the end! (Hehe, if only I took that thought to heart more often; I'd have finished this Chopin piece by now, for one. Grr.)

I need to get crackin' on it. I've spent too much time working on my Guitar, and not enough time playing it.

I hope you are having a delightful week!

    You too!

  38. Thanks for your thoughts on those two albums! I was trying to decide which I would get first when I finally got around to getting her live albums. I think it will be "Spread Your Wings..." since I like a more intimate feel.

I watched Ladyhawke's new video and I really enjoyed it! It was very cool. I also noticed how pretty her eyes are, hehe. :)
Aw man! That's so stupid! I wonder why that happened? And people wonder why the music industry is getting more and more unprofitable.

Movie-watching at home has become so snazzy! I'm lame though and stick to DVDs. :)

They are both great in their own way. "Wings" is a restoration of a recording that was thought to be lost, but fortunately, they were able to salvage it. "Season" is an extended version of the original LP, it was conceived as a double album, but the clueless suits at Columbia cheaped out, and chopped it in half for it's vinyl release. And to add insult to injury, they edited some of the songs that were left. As you might imagine, Laura was not exactly thrilled with their shenanigans. The CD has all the songs restored, and unedited, the way she originally intended, plus it includes some bonus tracks.

    >watched Ladyhawke's new video and I really enjoyed it! It was very cool. I also noticed how pretty her eyes are, hehe. :)

Yea, Ladyhawke is lovely, and SO talented,
Kinda like Laura, maybe that's why I became an instant fan of her's too....

    >Aw man! That's so stupid! I wonder why that happened? And people wonder why the music industry is getting more and more unprofitable.

It's disappointing to have to wait longer, but I will definitely be purchasing it as soon as possible.

    >Movie-watching at home has become so snazzy! I'm lame though and stick to DVDs. :)

Do you have an HDTV? If so, you should definitely get a Blu-Ray player, they are pretty cheap now, and they can upscale your DVD to make them look better than they did on the regular player.

    >P.S. You might appreciate my latest post on this blog

Wow, thank you, that is a wonderful write up on them. I've been enjoying "Out of Frequency" quite alot, my fave song of the moment is probably "Mafia", here's a link if you'd like to check it out.

Talent plus beauty is a pretty unbeatable combination. ;)

I don't believe we do have HDTV. For now I'm fine with the mediocre picture. If they don't come out with some new way of watching movies in the next five years, I might get one.

I hope you have a peaceful Sunday. :)

You're welcome, and thank you! Ooh, I like 'Mafia'! You can tell their sound is changing, yet it isn't totally foreign. If I didn't have so many other albums waiting to be bought, I would so buy Out of Frequency now. Darn my expansive (and expensive) music tastes! :P

Yea, it's odd that they did that, unlike Verve, Columbia usually didn't interfere with her ideas.

Talent plus beauty is a pretty unbeatable combination. ;)

Yup, as a Guy, I guess I have to admit that I do enjoy a bit of Eye candy along with the music now and again... ;)) I personally think Laura looks Gorgeous in the videos of her performing "Wedding Bell Blues"/"Poverty Train" at the Monterey Pop Festival, and "He's a Runner"/"Save the Country" from the Kraft Music Hall TV special. I just wish there were more footage of her in action. Sadly, compared to many other Artists, there just isn't much video of her available. Supposedly, she considered doing her own TV special, and later a Music Video, but they didn't happen. What a treasure they would be for Fans today if she had done them though!

    >I don't believe we do have HDTV. For now I'm fine with the mediocre picture. If they don't come out with some new way of watching movies in the next five years, I might get one.

I have a 40" Sony that I use as both my computer monitor, and as my TV. I hope you can get one someday, I'm sure you'll love it. :)

    >I hope you have a peaceful Sunday. :)

I just bought a new Camera, and I'll be putting it through it's paces this weekend, getting ready for my eventual Youtube debut.

    >You're welcome, and thank you! Ooh, I like 'Mafia'!

Yea, it's got a really infectious groove to it!

    >You can tell their sound is changing, yet it isn't totally foreign.

They are quite versatile, unlike a lot of other Artists today(mainly, most of the ones who get played on the radio all the time!) >:O

    >If I didn't have so many other albums waiting to be bought, I would so buy Out of Frequency now. Darn my expansive (and expensive) music tastes! :P

I don't know how long you will have to wait to be able to afford it, but I've bought some extras to give out as gifts. I know how much you like them, so if want one, just let me know, and it's your's. :)

Well, gotta get to work testing out my new gear.... Have fun whatever you're doing.

  42. I haven’t seen anything from the Kraft Music Hall TV special (yet), but I agree that Laura looks beautiful at the Monterey Pop Festival. It makes me so sad that she thought the audience hated her.
As a retiring person, I can understand her reluctance to go on camera, but I agree it’s a pity she didn’t more often.

Woohoo to the youtube debut! (That almost rhymed...)

Ugh, popular radio makes me lose faith in music. But thankfully, the artists I find online restore it and then some!

Aww, you are too kind! (Regarding the new AGT album). But you don’t have to do that; give it to someone who’s not a fan yet. I technically can afford it now, but I put my emusic subscription on hold for the next few months to decrease my expenditure. When the hold is over I shall buy it, either that month or the next. :)

You are in for a MAJOR treat! Here's a link to her performances. The quality isn't very high, but I have learned that their is a pristine copy still in existence, I wish they'd release it on Blu-Ray!

I love watching these clips, Laura doesn't just sing the songs she BECOMES them, she is in fact Music Personified!

    >but I agree that Laura looks beautiful at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Absolutely! I try not to be a drooling Fanboy, but dang, she really gets to me. ;))

    >It makes me so sad that she thought the audience hated her.

That's a mystery.... In the clips you can hear people shouting "We love you!", and "Beautiful!", maybe she had a bit too much to smoke that night, and imagined a negative response. The real tragedy is that when they were getting ready to put the movie on DVD, the producers invited Laura to come and see/hear for herself that she was actually very well received - but she succumbed to cancer before she got a chance to check it out. Ok, I better shut up, or I'll be bawling like a baby again, no Artist has ever made me happier, and yet sadder than our wonderful Laura has.... :.(

    >As a retiring person, I can understand her reluctance to go on camera, but I agree it’s a pity she didn’t more often.

    Yes indeed.

    >Woohoo to the youtube debut! (That almost rhymed...)

I'm hoping to be ready by around June. I need a lot of practice if I'm to do justice to Laura's amazing songs. I will let you, and some other select Friends hear the work in progress versions soon.

    >Ugh, popular radio makes me lose faith in music. But thankfully, the artists I find online restore it and then some!

My faith in music is fine, but I have NO faith in what's left of "Popular" radio. Happily, it's quickly becoming superfluous.

    >Aww, you are too kind! (Regarding the new AGT album).

Yea, I am - but I can't help it, I LIKE doing nice things for good People, a habit I never want to break! :)

    >But you don’t have to do that; give it to someone who’s not a fan yet.

Oh, I will, trust me, The Asteroids would do well to hire me as their PR man!

    >I technically can afford it now, but I put my emusic subscription on hold for the next few months to decrease my expenditure. When the hold is over I shall buy it, either that month or the next. :)

I understand completely - I've been spending a bit on Musical gear, and it can add up fast.(I still want to try to get a new Amp, not to mention that Turntable I told you about!) My offer still stands tho, if you find you can't bare to wait - and don't forget, Ladyhawke's new album is coming in May....;))

Actually, scratch that - I've seen her performing 'Save the Country' live at Kraft Hall, but I hadn't seen 'He's A Runner'. I love how she becomes her music. It's one of my most favourite things about her. I hope a good quality does get released; that would be fab.

Aww, yeah. Such a sad story, and I wish she could've seen it. :(

I can think of no better habit to have. :) Haha, I think the AST should definitely hire you as a PR man. ;)

Man, so much good music being released! I really need to find a millionaire to marry. That's really the best solution I can think of. :P

Oh, WOW. Thanks so much for that link! I am downloading even as I type this.

I hope the start of your April has been great. :)

No prob, I know you've been busy, and so have I.

Yes it would. There is so little footage of her. Sigh.... If they only had iPhones in the '70s, we'd have a visual record of every Concert she did.

      >Aww, yeah. Such a sad story, and I wish she could've seen it. :(

Alas, Laura's story has more than it's fair share of sad ironies, and that continues even today. She finally got accepted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but her only Son Gil was not even invited, he had to buy his own ticket and will sit in the back of the Auditorium away from the other inductees and their kin. I'm no fan of his particular Music, and I understand that he was apparently a bit of a trouble maker as a youth, but I also know that Laura loved him, the lyrics to many of her later songs expressed that clearly. I think it would have been nice to have him accept the induction on her behalf, and say a few words, after all, he knew her as well as anyone could have.

      >I can think of no better habit to have. :) Haha, I think the AST should definitely hire you as a PR man. ;)

I'd gladly do my best for them!

      >Man, so much good music being released!

I think it's always been that way, but the radio can no longer keep it hidden from us. ;))

      >I really need to find a millionaire to marry. That's really the best solution I can think of. :P

I sincerely hope you do - just as long as he really loves you(and you him), without that, money doesn't matter much.

      >Oh, WOW. Thanks so much for that link! I am downloading even as I type this.

Well, there's some great(new to you)music that came your way that you don't have to worry about budgeting for. The Angel in the Dark is looking out for you! :)

I hope the start of your April has been great. :)

Ok so far, I hope your's is fantastic!

  46. Melee, just an update on my previous post. I have great news, apparently, the RARHOFF Brass has reversed it's decision, and Laura's Son Gil will now be seated with the VIPs, and Bette Midler will present him with his Mom's award! =)

Here's a link to the story:

Sorry to bother you, but I thought you might like to know the good news. Have a fun week!

  47. You're not a bother at all! I am so happy you dropped by to tell me the happy ending to what could have been a dreadful tale. I'm glad they had a change of heart, for whatever reason.

It'd be nice to have a time machine, wouldn't it? If only to go back and tape those moments no one knew was significant at the time. Though my significant moments are pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things, haha.

Hehe, don't worry - I would never marry for money. I think I would detest myself if I did that. It's love or nothing for me, though I've never particularly been a romantic.

I am terribly grateful for that beautiful Angel. :)

I hope you had a nice Easter as well as the following week!

Thanks. :) I'm glad too, Laura really deserves this honor, and it's nice to know that now there won't be a controversy mucking it up.

    >It'd be nice to have a time machine, wouldn't it? If only to go back and tape those moments no one knew was significant at the time. Though my significant moments are pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things, haha.

Well, if I had a Time machine, I wouldn't use it for simply filming a concert - I'd go to the future when there's a cure for ovarian cancer, then I'd go back and give that cure to Laura.

Hehe, don't worry - I would never marry for money. I think I would detest myself if I did that. It's love or nothing for me, though I've never particularly been a romantic.

Well, I hope you find both!

    >I am terribly grateful for that beautiful Angel. :)

Me too, that's why I'd do what I wrote above if I had a Time machine.... :)

    >I hope you had a nice Easter as well as the following week!

I did. Easter was on the 8th, which was also the 15th anniversary of Laura's passing, so I lit a candle in her honor, and said a Prayer for her. I'm not really a particularly Religious Person, and I don't usually Pray unless I really mean it from the deepest part of my Heart - and in Laura's case, I most definitely do. The next day, I read the good news about Gil at the RARHOF ceremony, so I'd like to believe my Prayer was answered.... :)

    Have a fun weekend!

PS:I ordered my new turntable, and it should arrive soon - yay! A Friend from the Yahoo Nyro discussion group, also generously sold me her spare copy of the "Nested" LP in excellent condition, so now I have 5 Laura albums to enjoy om vinyl! The Asteroids GT, and Ladyhawke are available on vinyl too, so I'm gonna be in for a great Musical experience! =)

  49. Hey Melee, just an update - my new turntable arrived today, and I'm listening to "Nested" as I write this! This is the first time I've heard Laura's Beautiful voice on vinyl, and I'm in complete Musical bliss! =))))

  50. Haha, true - that's a fantastic idea for the time machine. Obviously I wasn't thinking big. ;)

Thank you! I hope you find both too! Provided that's something you want, of course. :)

I think your prayer was indeed answered! Though I'm suffering a spiritual remission, I am a great believer in the power of prayer.

RAH! How exciting! One of my favourite things to do is listen to my Christmas and the Beads of Sweat when I'm home alone. Ooh, so you have five Nyro records? I only can remember a couple of them. What are the other ones?
I love that a lot of recent artists have started releasing on vinyl. I haven't bought any, but it's nice to know I could if I wanted to. I'd like to have the album Colour Green by Sibylle Baier on vinyl some time. I have a deep connection with it, and for some reason I feel like it's an album one should have the record of.

    Anyway, I hope you're having a satisfying spring. :)

Thinking Big is the easy part - DOING Big things is where it tends to get a bit tricky!

      >Thank you! I hope you find both too! Provided that's something you want, of course. :)

Something I definitely want is to get better at playing Guitar, I'm still not good enough. ;/

      >I think your prayer was indeed answered!

Yea, I guess it really was. Laura's induction segment went exceptionally well, and I hope that somewhere out there, her Soul felt the Love everyone expressed for her.

      >Though I'm suffering a spiritual remission, I am a great believer in the power of prayer.

Well, I'm not really a Religious Person, but I'm not an Atheist either. I tend to Pray mainly to give thanks for good fortune that comes my way, and especially to send my Love energies to People I care about.

      >RAH! How exciting! One of my favourite things to do is listen to my Christmas and the Beads of Sweat when I'm home alone. Ooh, so you have five Nyro records? I only can remember a couple of them. What are the other ones?

So far, I've got "The first songs" - which is the original 1969 Verve re issue of "More than a new discovery" - it has the same picture of Laura on it as did "discovery", and it has the same track order as the 1973 Columbia label "First songs", that has the red cover w/the flowers.

"Eli & the thirteenth confession", I have two of these LPs!

"Christmas & the beads of sweat", also have two!

"Gonna take a Miracle", the classic Soul covers album Laura did with LaBelle.

And of course, "Nested". I'm surprised I haven't found "New York Tendaberry" yet, I read that one was her best seller. So I'm still searching for "Tendaberry" "Smile", "Season of Lights", "Mother's Spiritual", "Live at the Bottom Line", "Walk the Dog and light the light", and "Angel in the Dark"(I'm not sure that one was ever released on vinyl, I hope so!)
And of course I still want the original release of "Discovery", even tho "First songs" is really the same album....;))

      >I love that a lot of recent artists have started releasing on vinyl. I haven't bought any, but it's nice to know I could if I wanted to. Yea, now that I've got a turntable, I think I'll be buying LPs instead of CDs whenever they are available! My turntable also has a USB port, so I can record the albums onto CD if I desire.

BTW, Ladyhawke's "Anxiety" comes out on May 29th, I'm going to purchase it on vinyl for myself. But I'm also going to buy the MP3 download version from Amazon as E mail gifts for some Family, and Friends. I'll be glad to buy you one as well, if you'd like. :) Here is the link to her new video:

      >Anyway, I hope you're having a satisfying spring. :)

So far, it's been a frustrating one. I've been suffering from really bad insomnia, which is one of the reasons I've been too tired to practice Guitar more.

Hope you are doing well, I'll say good night with a link to another long time Fave Artist of mine, Alice Cooper, talking about how he's a huge fan of Laura, and came to the RARHOF to show support for her(He was inducted a couple of years ago.)

  51. Hey Melee, I don't know if you got to see Laura's RARHOF induction, but in case you didn't, here's a link.

It's not the broadcast, someone in the audience filmed it. I don't get HBO, but I heard they cut out parts of Bette Midler's speech(quite evil of them really!), so this might be a better way to see it.

  52. How long have you been playing the guitar? It's not an easy instrument, or at least I don't find it to be so. I much prefer the more straightforward nature of the piano. :)

Best of luck with the rest of your Laura Nyro vinyl collection! I didn't know The First Songs was ever released with the flower cover and the More Than a New Discovery track ordering. I wonder why they decided to change it...

Guess what? My birthday was on the 7th and I received a CD of Nested and also Time and Love: The Art and Soul of Laura Nyro!
First of all, I'm loving Nested! Her voice is so much richer and silkier. It's great to hear this side of her.
And I'm adoring having some Nyro sheet music. So far, I've muddled my way through almost all the songs. I'm quite good at "Captain Saint Lucifer". I really would love sheet music for the whole New York Tendaberry album. Actually, I'd love sheet music for all her songs! There used to be one, I think, but now it's extremely rare. :|

Vinyls are much more magical than CDs. Less convenient, of course. But whoever said that magic had to be convenient. ;)

Aww, again - that is very generous of you, but you don't have to do that! The video has certainly increased my excitement for her new album, though!
I'm thinking about buying Out Of Frequency on emusic in the next couple days. The price will probably go down next year, but I don't think I can wait that long. ;) As it is, it's only $7, which is pretty good compared to itunes.

Oh no! :( I hope your insomnia has gotten better.

Who would've thought that Alice Cooper would be such a big fan of Laura Nyro? He has good taste. :)

Thank you very much for the link, I hadn't seen any of her induction yet! Such a wonderful speech from Bette Midler - you could see how much this meant to her.

I hope you have a good weekend. :)

  53. I've been playing Guitar since I was 13, which was, well.... a long time ago! ;)) Lots of People have told me Piano is easy, and Guitar is hard - but I feel it's just the opposite.

When I got into Laura's Music, I was so stoked, I almost bought a Piano, but I'm really useless on it, the Guitar is my thing. ;)

Thanks, I hope to get at least one good condition copy of all her records. The LP of "The first songs" I have is sort of an inbetween release - I think Verve was probably trying to capitalize on the acclaim she was getting from "Eli", and "Tendaberry", so they re issued the album she did for them.. It just says "Laura Nyro" on the front, and has the same photo of her that appeared on "New discovery". On the back it says "The first songs", and it has the revised track order with "Wedding bell blues" first. A few years later, Columbia bought the rights, and re released this album, but with the red flower cover.

Happy Birthday! See, I told you "Nested" is awesome! =) I have"T&L:TAASOLN", and "Lyrics, and Reminiscences", and of course the "Soul Picnic" Bio, Love 'em all!

I hope you enjoy "Frequency"!(I sure do!)

My insomnia is really my own fault, I tend to jump on the computer right before bed, and stay up too long typing up lengthy responses to conversations, like I'm doing right now. ;))

Glad you enjoyed the links, here's one I particularly like, it's long but worth watching. This Guy's enthusiasm for Laura is great to see. Kinda reminds me of - ME! ;))
He gets some of the facts a bit mixed up, but it's obvious that Laura has won another hard core Fan.

  54. I've been such a slacker lately; I am sorry for taking so long in replying!

That's funny - the difficulty of instruments is basically all a matter of perspective. I still have much trouble believing that a guitar could ever be easier to play than a piano - on the piano everything is laid out so simply! But I have been playing it for 10 years or so. I might be biased. ;) Guitar playing is hard to pick up, because it's so painful on your fingers at first. It was for me, at least.

Thank you! :) I'll have to look into "Lyrics and Reminiscences". I know I definitely want to buy "Soul Picnic" some time, as the copy I read was from the library. I have such a distressingly long list of books I want to buy though, grrr. (Reading is my addiction.)

I downloaded "Out of Frequency" a few days ago and am totally in love with it! I listened to the samples before I bought it, and I was still unsure if I would like it...... But I have not regretted buying it in the least. It's such fun! Different from their first album, but not dissimilar.

Ahh. I have heard being on the computer before bed isn't good, because of the screen light shining in your eyes. Of course, that doesn't stop me from doing it either!

Since it's so long, I haven't finished watching the video yet - but it's great someone talked about her for that long! HURRAH FOR HARDCORE FANS! :D

Slacker? Hey that's MY job! ;))

    >That's funny - the difficulty of instruments is basically all a matter of perspective.

Yup, and from my perspective, I'm terrible on the Piano.

Acoustics can sometimes be pretty brutal on the fingers, but Electrics, especially Fender Telecasters are super easy to play.

    >Thank you! :) I'll have to look into "Lyrics and Reminiscences".

Yea, it's pretty cool, but as usual, they get the lyrics for "Captain for dark mornings" wrong, I've never seen the correct lyrics printed anywhere! :/

    >I know I definitely want to buy "Soul Picnic" some time, as the copy I read was from the library.

Wow, I'm impressed they have it! I had to order mine from Amazon.

    >I downloaded "Out of Frequency" a few days ago and am totally in love with it! I listened to the samples before I bought it, and I was still unsure if I would like it...... But I have not regretted buying it in the least. It's such fun! Different from their first album, but not dissimilar.

Oh yes, great album! Have you seen the new video for "Major"? Love it! =)

I tried to order the vinyl LP from their site, but I couldn't get it to co-operate. Argh!

Ladyhawke's "Anxiety" is ALLEGEDLY being released this week too - they better not postpone it again or I may not be responsible for my actions. ;)) Amazon has the LP listed, and that's what I'm ordering - I'm now a true Vinyl junkie!
Haven't found any more Laura LPs yet, but I did score a couple of real classics in mint condition, "All over the place" by the Bangles, and "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly, GROOVY BABY!

    >Since it's so long, I haven't finished watching the video yet - but it's great someone talked about her for that long! HURRAH FOR HARDCORE FANS! :D

  56. Well, then move over - because I think I've taken over your title as "Top Slacker". ;)

You'd think someone would be able to get the lyrics right! Is there a specific part they always misprint?

I was surprised the library had "Soul Picnic" as well! But it is a pretty awesome library - it's got a lot of books most libraries don't have. :)

Ooh, I hadn't seen the music video yet! A great video for a great song. :)
The other week there was a rare occurrence where I was watching TV and I heard the song "Golden Age" on a commercial! I was very excited. :)

So, was Ladyhawke's album released? (I'm so on top of things, ha.)
Ohh, you've got the vinyl bug!!! My vinyl collection is a grand total of...four! The other day I found a really nice copy of a Carpenters album in a thrift store - I was really happy.

Anyway, have you been having a good summer?

      Congratulations, you're #1! =) Just kidding. ;))

      >You'd think someone would be able to get the lyrics right!

Yea, the weird thing is, many fans swear up and down that the printed lyrics are correct, I've gotten in arguments with People about it. :/ I've seen several original lyrics actually written by Laura's own hand, but not "Captain for dark mornings", I would love to see what she originally wrote, because what she sings is NOT what the lyrics sheets say.

      >Is there a specific part they always misprint?

Ok, I know you are familiar with the song - you did say "Tendaberry" is your favorite, so here goes. Laura sings "Come along now, and I'll be your Woman if...." What is the next line? Don't read the lyrics sheet, just listen to it, and tell me what you hear.

      >I was surprised the library had "Soul Picnic" as well! But it is a pretty awesome library - it's got a lot of books most libraries don't have. :)

They wouldn't happen to have "The Hitch Hiker's guide to Transylvania", would they?

      >Ooh, I hadn't seen the music video yet! A great video for a great song. :)

Yea, it's SO much better than the video for "Heart attack", Mette looks like Madonna's stunt double in that one! ;)) I saw an interview with Mette, and she said the reason they did such a quickie video, is that they only had one day to film it, and she was the only Band Member available on that day.

I think the original pre-Heineken vid for "The Golden age" is still probably their best one, LOVE the outer space concept, it fits them PERFECTLY. It's a shame many only know the beer ad one tho.

      >The other week there was a rare occurrence where I was watching TV and I heard the song "Golden Age" on a commercial! I was very excited. :)

Yea, that's probably the Heineken beer ad I was referring to. It's great that it's getting them more well deserved exposure, but the REAL video for the song is truly fantastic, and deserves to be seen, I hope everyone checks it out.

      >So, was Ladyhawke's album released? (I'm so on top of things, ha.)

Yup, I now have the CD, the LP, and the MP3s, legally - yay! =)))) I also gifted the MP3s to a Friend who was going on a trip, so she could listen to it in transit. I'm about to go over to Amazon to get it for another Friend to congratulate him on a job promotion. If you'd like me to gift it to you as well, just say the word, and it's your's. :)

      >Ohh, you've got the vinyl bug!!! My vinyl collection is a grand total of...four! The other day I found a really nice copy of a Carpenters album in a thrift store - I was really happy.

Cool, I hope it plays well! My collection absolutely SKYROCKETING - I now have a whopping nine, count 'em NINE Lps! I'll be in double digits soon, I just bought "Abbey Road" by the Beatles, brand new, and the local Fry's where I bought it has some LPs by the Doors, and Jimi Hendrix that I will be picking up asap. I also want the new Rush album "Clockwork Angels" on vinyl, but that's a double album, and is a bit pricey, may have to wait a bit for that one.(We're seeing them in concert in November, I'm sure I can get it by then.)

Anyway, have you been having a good summer?

Not bad, hope your's is going good.

  57. Sorry to bug you again, but I just found what might be the only surviving(nearly)complete Laura concert video, and thought you might want to check it out.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLtKtI9Ug3w

It's a major treat, but I'm in tears. It breaks my Heart to think that she would be diagnosed with cancer not long after that show. Such a wonderful Artist, and a truly great Lady, she really lived for the Music.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Okay, I hear - "I'll be your woman, if you'll be my captain. Say it." At least, that's what I hear half of the time. It also sounds like she's saying "I'll be your woman, if you'll [fill / bill / feel] my captain." None of which sound right. And she could be saying "say yeah" instead of "say it". I just have no clue, no wonder everyone writes it wrong. Now I'm very curious what you think it's supposed to be. XD

Hmm, nope - they don't seem to have The Hitch Hiker's Guide to Transylvania... they do have the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, though. ;)

Haha! Mette does rather look like Madonna's stunt double in that. XD But the band being absent from the video makes sense now.
I hope people who enjoy the beer ad look up the band! I do that whenever I hear a song I like in a commercial. Which has only been once (maybe twice), but oh well. ;)

I'm reading a biography of Janis Joplin at the moment, at it makes me so sad because it mentioned the time when Laura went backstage to tell Janis how much she enjoyed her show, and Janis basically ignored her. :| I like Janis and all, but I'll take sensitive Laura over her any day.

As always, you are infinitely kind (regarding Ladyhawke's new album), but it's alright - you don't have to do that. :)
I put my emusic account on hold for a few months, but I don't know how long I'll last because all the sudden I've developed this addiction to Queen and feel the compulsion to buy all their albums. Do you like Queen?

OoOoO. Nine?!? That IS skyrocketing! Wow, an Abbey Road record - that's an excellent find! Abbey Road is my favourite Beatles album. Well, it's a tie between that and The White Album.

My summer's been alright. I think it's getting better, though! :)

P.S. You're not bugging me at all! Of course, I am terribly interested! Where would I be without you to keep me informed of new Laura items of interest? I'm watching it now. (And ack! don't tell me things like that! I think I'm going to cry too!)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I truly believe it's: "Come along now, and I'll be your Woman, if you'll fill my Captaincy" I played the song for a Friend, and she came up with the same line without me telling her. You picked up on the "Fill", which doesn't even remotely sound like "Be" as they always print it.

The line makes perfect sense, when you consider that(at least according to the Soul Picnic book), Laura was always looking for "Her Captain", a gallant Hero who would Love and defend her unconditionally. Unfortunately, she only found a bunch of self absorbed numb-skulls who had NO conception of how lucky they were to be in a relationship with such an awesome Lady. I think that's why she got fed up, and switched sides later on, but I really think if she'd found a Dude who REALLY cared about her, she would have stayed straight. ;)

Re: Asteroids. I first heard "Around the bend" on an Apple Ipod commercial, and I did look them up, but it took some effort - it would have been nice if they were credited, but there was no mention of the band in the ad, nor on Apple's site. It's like, "Well, if you can guess who does this great song, you are in for a treat - but WE ain't gonna tell ya!"

I read that Janis was supposedly jealous of Laura - but I can't think of why she would be, Laura was pretty much the best kept secret in the Music Biz, while Janis was all over the Radio with hit singles, in her OWN voice. It doesn't make much sense.
I think this may be another urban Myth that got blown way out of proportion, like Laura supposedly getting "Booed off the stage" at the Monterey Pop Festival - when in reality, People were yelling out "Beautiful!".(and they were absolutely correct!)

RE:Ladyhawke. Ok, just trying to help a fellow Music enthusiast. :) Well, I've legally purchased the new album 6 times already:2 MP3 versions, and a CD as gifts, and a CD, MP3 and LP for myself. Many newer Female Artists have been called "The new Laura Nyro", but to Me, Ladyhawke is the only one in Laura's league. They sound nothing alike, but it's the Heart and Soul they put into their writing and performing that makes me adore them both.

Re:Queen. I've been a Fan of them since I was a wee Lad, I think my fave song by them is probably "Fat Bottom Girls"(Get on your bikes and ride! ;)) Did you know that Stephani Germanotta got her stage name from Queen's song "Radio Gaga"?

Re: Beatles albums. I love 'em all, Legendary is an understatement here, to me the Beatles are like a four Man Laura Nyro, and Laura Nyro is like a one Woman Beatles. I wonder if they ever crossed paths?

Re:Summer. Well, mine just got a bit better, I got a bonus, and I spent it on a new Hofner Violin Bass(speaking of the Beatles!;)) I was going to get an IPad, but I tried out the Bass, and it really "Spoke" to me.

Re:Laura vids. Oh man, if you want to see me completely fall apart, just show me the "Musical Architecture" video, Where Laura performs an unfinished work in progress version of "Angel in the Dark". When she says "This is where the bridge is going to be - soon", and doesn't quite manage to conceal her sadness, my Heart shatters into a zillion pieces... :...( Have you seen that one? here's the link if not, but be warned it's Beautiful, but tough to watch.

  60. Ahhh! That never crossed my mind, but that makes perfect sense! I wish I could've listened to the song with new ears, because I've read the lyrics before, so I couldn't fully erase them out of my head. Now I am insanely curious if that is indeed what she wrote.

I know it makes no sense, but you can't underestimate Janis Joplin's huge insecurity, which led to most of her irrational behaviour. She was a tortured woman, bless her soul.

If I ever became a musician, I'd certainly want your to be a hardcore fan of me what with all the support you give, wow!

I don't know why I didn't get fully into Queen sooner, because I've vaguely liked them for years. Now I can't get enough, I burst out singing "Fat-Bottomed Girls" the other day as I was doing things around the house. I thought I'd gotten away with it, until my sister was like "Uh... why are you singing that?" Oops, I thought she wasn't listening. :P My favourite song of theirs at the moment is probably "I Want to Break Free" because it's the song that got me interested in listening to Queen more in-depth.
Do you have a favourite album by them? Because I'm trying to decide which one to buy next. At the moment, I only have Jazz.
Yes! Though relatively recent knowledge, I did know that she got her name from a Queen song. Who would've thought!

The Beatles changed my life. They truly did. I owe it all to my father who brought home the film A Hard Day's Night one fateful summer afternoon... I bet if Laura Nyro and The Beatles had ever crossed paths, the world would've imploded with so much talent in one place.

Ooh, awesome! How does a violin bass differ from a regular bass? Is it just a build thing? I'd take a musical instrument over an ipad any day. ;)

Oh my goodness, how have I missed that film? It is so stunning, so touching. The part with "Angel in the Dark" was so moving. :'( I loved the part after she's been talking about being Italian, Catholic and Jewish and she just starts smiling up at the camera, oh! And that footage of her singing "Wedding Bell Blues" must be pretty rare. I can't find it anywhere else.

Well, the term "Captaincy" is SO like something Laura would write, she was certainly a Wordsmith with a fondness for using alternate and/or retro sounding phrases.

    >I know it makes no sense, but you can't underestimate Janis Joplin's huge insecurity, which led to most of her irrational behaviour. She was a tortured woman, bless her soul.

I think Laura had more reason to be jealous of Janis, she was writing the best songs around, but the dim bulbs at the radio wouldn't play them, unless someone else covered them. :/

    >If I ever became a musician, I'd certainly want your to be a hardcore fan of me what with all the support you give, wow!

I just really want to do my part, because I appreciate the fact that there are still talented Artists who Like Laura before them, are making a stand for Musical integrity.

Try "A day at the Races" :)

    >Yes! Though relatively recent knowledge, I did know that she got her name from a Queen song. Who would've thought!

I did. As soon as I heard the name, I thought - "All we need is Lady-o Gaga...." ;))

    >The Beatles changed my life. They truly did. I owe it all to my father who brought home the film A Hard Day's Night one fateful summer afternoon...

I just got "Yellow Submarine" on Blu-Ray, I can't wait for "A Hard Day's Night", and "Help" to be released, I'm surprised they haven't been already!

    >I bet if Laura Nyro and The Beatles had ever crossed paths, the world would've imploded with so much talent in one place.

The Beatles are the only ones who could have covered a Laura song and truly do it justice, and she would have done the same, if she'd covered one of theirs. I could really hear her pouring her Heart and Soul into "It's only Love" - it would have been a perfect number for her!

    >Ooh, awesome! How does a violin bass differ from a regular bass? Is it just a build thing?

It has a short scale thin neck, which makes it super easy to play, and the hollow body gives it a really rich deep tone.

    >I'd take a musical instrument over an ipad any day. ;)

Well, I agree, and now that I'm getting back into Bass, I'm jonesing for a Fender Precision.... But I do need an
ipad, just wish they weren't so darn expensive!

    >Oh my goodness, how have I missed that film? It is so stunning, so touching. The part with "Angel in the Dark" was so moving. :'(

Can't find the words to even reply.... :((

    >I loved the part after she's been talking about being Italian, Catholic and Jewish and she just starts smiling up at the camera, oh!

Such a Beautiful, sweet, genuine smile. My Heart goes out to her.

    >And that footage of her singing "Wedding Bell Blues" must be pretty rare. I can't find it anywhere else.

VERY rare, that's probably the closest she ever came to making a Music Video, I sure would Love to see the whole thing.

  64. HI ARTIE. I'm not dead - I swear. Terribly sorry I've been slacking.

I love the way Laura puts things. :)

Guess what?! I bought Anxiety! Woot! I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, though. (I did watch the 'Blue Eyes' video though - oooh!)

I had a bit of a windfall, because I recommended my brother to the site I buy music from and got lots of free music, so that was nice. I bought A Day at the Races and also A Night At the Opera and The Works. I've never bought this many albums by the same artist so quickly before. XD

Now I find myself accidentally singing "Lady-O Gaga". Thanks a lot. :P

Strangely enough, I've yet to see Yellow Submarine. But I've seen all the other "Beatles movies", which includes Let It Be. That hasn't been officially released on DVD, has it? I'd like to see that one released even though it's sort of sad.

I can actually hear Laura Nyro in my head singing 'It's Only Love'. :O

I've been scanning Laura Nyro pics and making GIFs of her video to keep her legacy alive on tumblr, hehe. :)

That 'Poverty Train' video was wonderful! I hadn't seen some of those pics either. I wonder what their source is, hmmm...

Oh! It's be such fun to be part of a Laura Nyro tribute! Whenever I'm home alone I like to sing 'Poverty Train' with much angst. I'm sure I sound ridiculous, but just singing that song and trying to channel Laura is so amazing. That came out sounding weirder than I meant it to...

I hope you are having a good... um, end of summer? :)

Glad you are ok! No need for apologies, I know how it is when things get hectic. ;))

    She's a wonderful Wordsmith, that's for sure!

Great! =)))) I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Glad you got all those albums you wanted. :)

    Catchy, isn't it? ;))

I just watched the Blu-Ray of Yellow Sub, it's a fun Psychedelic trip, you should check it out! I don't know what the hold up on releasing the other Beatles movies is.

    >I can actually hear Laura Nyro in my head singing 'It's Only Love'. :O<

Me too! You know, the album that eventually became "Angel in the Dark" was originally intended to be two different albums, one of new material, and one all classic covers - sort of like a "Gonna take a Miracle volume 2". I think this one would be perfect for the covers set - a slightly spooky, upbeat number, yet with an underlying feel of subtle sadness that would fit Laura's groove to a T , and if you think about it, this could sort of act like a prequel to "Gibsom Street" as well!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQkM6us8ISs

Yes, it's been covered before, and the original is pretty much unbeatable, but I bet Laura could have really nailed it like no other.

    >I've been scanning Laura Nyro pics and making GIFs of her video to keep her legacy alive on tumblr, hehe. :)<

I hope you win her some new Fans! =)

    >That 'Poverty Train' video was wonderful! I hadn't seen some of those pics either. I wonder what their source is, hmmm...<

Seems there's still Laura stuff out there that we have not seen, or heard yet. Such as: "The Moon Song", an early unreleased track.

    Awesome! =)

Hey, I channel Laura all the time, once she gets into your Heart, she stays there! =)

    >I hope you are having a good... um, end of summer? :)<

Yea, Summer kind of whizzed by. Amazing, this month(September)is the fist anniversary of what I call "My Greatest Musical Epiphany", when I heard Laura sing "Stoned Soul Picnic", for the first time. I was astonished by her that night, and I still feel the exact same rush every time I hear her!

Well, have a fun week, here's another link I'm sure you'll enjoy - Laura Live in Japan!

  68. HI! I've been absent from blogger lately (in case you haven't noticed) but I am hoping to be more active now. Your messages don't bug me at all. I'm just procrastinating, as usual. :)

I didn't know that about Angel in the Dark! Though it's fruitless and obvious to say, how I wish she could have stayed to finish the project. :(

I've really being enjoying Anxiety, by the way. For some reason, I haven't been listening to much of the new music I've bought lately, but Anxiety is one of the few I remember to put on. :)

Ahh! Your Laura Nyro anniversary is in September and mine is in November! This time last year was when I finally immersed myself in her music, after

I read the article on cleveland.com the other day, the one with the quotes from Janis Ian, and I was fangirling (heh) so hard! I love that Laura couldn't express what she meant in technical terms, but Janis got it. I love that they were friends. :)

Thanks for the links! 'The Moon Song' is lovely, and I always appreciate you notifying me of Laura's concert links or obscure album downloads. :D

    I hope you've been well. :)

  69. Glad you're not bugged, I try to let all the Laura Fans I know about any cool stuff I find relating to her. :)

One can only speculate on what the 2 finished albums would have been like - but as a Fan, I am extremely proud of Laura for what she accomplished. Even tho she was very ill, she found the strength to give us one more taste of her Great Music, infusing it with every bit as much vigor, and vitality as she did on her early records. An Amazing Lady for sure!

So glad you're digging "Anxiety"! Ladyhawke, like Laura before her, is truly a one in a zillion talent. I bought the album six times already,(having also purchased her first album five times)and I just gave my CD to another Friend as a gift - so I'll be ordering a seventh.... Yea, you could say I like her A LOT. ;))

Yes, September is now a very special month for me. I remember being so totally smitten with Laura's eclectic Songwriting, her Beautiful voice and her delightful Piano playing, as well as being completely enchanted by the Lady herself - I thought I was gong insane - but then I was relieved to learn that this all consuming passion for her is actually pretty normal among Laura Nyro Fans! And now, over a year later, that passion has only grown, she still gets to me on a Soul deep level. =)

Ah yes, Janis Ian. I'll admit that I'm not too familiar with most of her stuff - didn't really care too much for "At Seventeen", but I do think "Society's Child" is way beyond BRILLIANT, absolutely one of THE BEST Pop songs ever written - right up there with Laura's "Stoned Soul Picnic", and LaBelle's "Lady Marmalade" - and you KNOW how much I Love those!

You are very welcome! I try to do a search for Laura related stuff about every week or so, I usually find some Gems, "The Moon Song" certainly qualifies! =))))

I'm ok. Hope you are doing fine. I just bought a new Acoustic Guitar, a Yamaha FG730S, and I'm Loving it! I have decided that even tho it's somewhat harder to play than an electric, I really want to go "Un plugged". I like the idea of having no effects or processing to hide behind, kinda like when Laura did concerts where it was just her, and the Piano. Now, if I could just learn to be even 1/1,000,000 as Brilliant as her.... ;)

I'll be on the look out for new stuff, and I'll keep you posted.

    Have fun!

  70. Artie - if you are reading this after all this time, I commend you!

I'm still very much enjoying Anxiety and Out of Frequency. I've been working as a house cleaner and those are two favourite albums I turn on to listen to.

Yeah, if you're not a teenage girl 'At Seventeen' probably won't mean much to you. XD I think the songs she considers her best are 'Society's Child', 'Jesse', and 'Stars'.

Speaking of LaBelle, I downloaded "Gonna Take a Miracle" the other month and having been loving that as well.

I hope you have been enjoying your guitar. :) And I hope you had a great Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and any other special occasion I missed.

    Take care!

  71. Wow, it HAS been a while - good to hear from you again! :)

Congrats on your new job, hope it's going well for you. Very glad you're continuing to enjoy Anxiety, and Out of Frequency.
By the way, you are not the only one I've turned on to LADYHAWKE....

    http://madrockerwprk76-80.blogspot.com/2012/08/ladyhawke-anxiety.html

It does my Heart good to know that I've helped get her some much deserved airplay. Oh, and I just got the special double album edition of "LADYHAWKE" on vinyl, LOVIN IT!

I certainly appreciate the important message of "At Seventeen", however it just doesn't grab me Musically. "Society's Child" has a strong message too, but it's the pure Pop Groove(and that Lovely Harpsichord)that really sends me! ;))

Ah, GONNA TAKE A MIRACLE.... Sigh.... Laura and Labelle = AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

I'm very much enjoying the Guitar - altho, it's taking waaaaaaaay longer than I'd hoped to get really good at playing it solo fingerstyle. Not giving up tho, I've downloaded lots of lessons, and I'm hitting the books.

    Happy whatever day(s)! ;))
